Exhaust systems are an essential part of every car with an engine. It is piping that moves the excess gasses from the engine to the back (rear end) of a vehicle. It comes out of each cylinder and collects in what is called the headers or manifolds then is pushed into one or two pipes. The pipes that are closer to the engine have a catalytic converter attached to help clean the exhaust gas that is exiting the engine. After that in about the middle of the vehicle is usually a small muffler/ resonator to help quit down the noise that comes from the engine. Then finally towards the back of the system is a muffler to try to make the exhaust as quiet as possible.

There are more reasons for the exhaust systems. One other major reason is to create back pressure to help suck out the exhaust gas from the engine cylinders. Everything from the bends to the diameter of the pipe has to do with this suction.
